A family tree is also known as a pedigree chart, which is a chart that represents family relationships.  The term comes from the tree-like structure of the chart.  Detailed family trees, used in medical circumstances and social work, are known as genograms.  Family trees are often very ornate and decorated with themes that hold some relevance to the family line.
